Nearly 5,000 Cross the Finish Line in the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler & 10K

11.05.23

PITTSBURGH  — Ideal fall running temperatures inspired nearly 5,000 to run or walk the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler & 10K. Runners from 30 states and four countries participated, including top running talent who competed for the $11,000 prize purse.

“This year’s EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler and 10K inspired so many to challenge themselves, whether they were racing for the prize purse or walking their first-ever 10K,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “P3R is committed to igniting a passion for movement and wellness for all, and it was great to celebrate the hard work and effort of all of today’s finishers.”

In the men’s race, Matt Baxter, from Flagstaff, Ariz., took an early lead and crossed the finish line in 47:54. Alejandro Ambrosio, from Boulder, Colo., finished second in 48:15, and Dylan Gearinger, from Philadelphia, finished third in 48:28.

On the women’s side, Maddie Van Beek, from Fargo, N.D., broke the finishers' tape in 59:01, and won the top prize of $2,500. Joanna Thompson, from New York City, finished second in 59:27, and Jen Bigham, from Pittsburgh, finished third in 59:53.

This year’s participants began their 10-mile journey on West Carson Street near Highmark Stadium and entered the Military and First Responders Appreciation Mile presented by Howmet Aerospace. They continued through Mister Roger’s Mile after crossing the West End Bridge, where volunteers in red sweaters handed out water. Next up was the DICK’S Sporting Goods City of ChampYinz Mile, where runners were greeted by the Pittsburgh Steel Line, Iceburgh, and the Pittsburgh Pierogies as they ran by Acrisure Stadium and PNC Park. In the final stretch through the Strip District, the Motivation Mile with various cheer groups inspired participants to push through the final two miles and finish on Liberty Avenue in front of EQT Plaza.

More than 1,100 participated in the EQT Pittsburgh 10K, which started near mile four of the 10-mile course. This year 284 participated in the first-ever Walking Division. Jacob Kerstetter, from Pittsburgh, was the first men’s finisher with a time of 35:50, and Nicole Feng, from Pittsburgh, was the first women’s finisher with a time of 40:42.

Parents and guardians could also take advantage of Kids of STEEL programming during the race, which allowed adults to run the race while their kids participated in fun activities at Highmark Stadium.

More than 300 runners earned an extra medal this morning by completing the #RUNWithP3R Challenge, which included the 2023 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events, the 2023 Fleet Feet Liberty Mile and today’s EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler and 10K.
